About the archive

Compiled by LensDigest Editorial.

What do these dates mean?

“Catalogue announcement” is the announcement date held in the historical DPReview dataset. “Announced” refers to a manufacturer announcement. “Marketed” is the first retail month recorded by Canon’s Camera Museum. A month-only record stays month-only: we do not invent a day. Announcement and delivery can fall in different years.

Regional model names are combined when the manufacturer identifies them as the same camera. Phones, drones, security cameras, industrial imaging products, lenses and firmware updates are outside the archive.

How complete is it?

Partial historical catalogue. The source dataset covers dated records through early 2020. Manufacturer records and researched additions extend the archive through 2025. Compact cameras are better represented than film, instant, action, cinema and broadcast cameras; later years are still being completed. Counts describe this archive, not all cameras released worldwide.

The 2008 starting point follows the introduction of Panasonic’s LUMIX G1 and Micro Four Thirds ↗. It is a browsing boundary, rather than a claim that no mirrorless digital camera existed earlier. The 2026 calendar retains the current announcements, shipping notes, attributed responses and separately labelled rumours.

Historical data, reviews and photographs

The historical baseline is adapted from dpreview.com digital camera database ↗, by Pablo Benito and Miquel Rived, published 2021-04-02, under CC BY 4.0 ↗. We selected dated records from 2008 onward, normalised fields, removed duplicate records and added manufacturer sources. Original source links accompany each entry.

Catalogue specifications have not all been checked against original manuals. Manufacturer records are labelled separately. Historic review links point to the original publication; they are not customer ratings. Official photographs are copied locally and credited. Where a photograph has not been archived, the entry is shown without an illustration.
